Uptown Modern is a 6000 square foot vintage furniture store selling restored furniture and accessories from the 1940s through the 1980s. We find it, fix it, and arrange it for you to see in an inviting environment. Our specialty is teak and rosewood Danish Modern credenzas as well as Scandinavian Modern dining tables and dining chairs. We also specialize in refurbished Mid Century Modern sofas, sectionals and lounge chairs. Our goal is to bring you furniture that is ready to take home and use--we do the work for you.
Where do you get all your stuff?
The question we are asked multiple times every day is WHERE do we find all the fabulous things in the shop. We can't give out ALL our secrets, but we can say we search all over the U.S. for great items to restore and sell. Merchandise comes mainly from estates (where we buy the whole estate) throughout Texas and the Midwest and from pickers all over the U.S. We also buy from flea markets and individuals who contact us, The merchandise is heavily edited to showcase the best MCM, Danish Modern, atomic and eclectic pieces that we can find for the Austin market. While we stock designer pieces by such names as Milo Baughman, Adrian Pearsall, Hans Wegner, Ib Kofod Larsen, Herman Miller, and George Nelson, we also sell high-style, no-name pieces that are highly functional, beautiful examples of mid 20th century furniture.
How often do you get new merchandise?
Because we travel constantly and drive thousands of miles a year to find inventory we generally get new items daily. While we can't predict exactly what we will find on each "hunting and gathering" trip, we can predict that we'll usually have some funky Italian or Blenko art glass, several unusual brass animals, a few large abstract original oil paintings along with mid century dressers, credenzas, dining tables & chairs, sofas, lounge chairs, and other big pieces of home furniture. Every single thing in the store is vintage and has been individually sourced and chosen by us--nothings is new (except for our artisan coffee tables) and nothing is "ordered." No 18 wheelers roll up to our back dock and unload boxes of parts to be assembled.
Who does your restoration?
We have a regular team of workers who sand and stain almost every wood piece that comes through our doors. They also fix major visible flaws, reglue every wobbly dining chair, and in general put things back together. While our restoration team does fix things, all vintage items will have wear indicative of years of use that enhances rather than detracts from their beauty. Upholstered items are sent to a variety of area upholsterers for new foam and fabric.
